Prevent Excessive Damage to Equipment - Locate Electrical Faults Now

Infrared electrical inspections assist in identifying areas of increased heat, which is often a sign of potential issues in electrical connections and components. By using infrared thermography, potential problems can be detected and corrected before they escalate into costly failures, safety hazards, and disruptions to productivity.
Because excessive and unbalanced heating is a potential sign of failure, infrared is the best diagnostic tool available for finding these hot connections in the early stages of degeneration.
Insurance companies often recommend infrared electrical inspections to proactively detect and prevent issues, ensuring the safety of personnel, equipment, and facilities. Infrared technology provides a highly effective diagnostic tool for finding potential problems in the early stages of degradation.

Identify Electrical Hot Spots with Infrared Imaging
Before an electrical component burns up, it heats up. Infrared thermography is used to perform predictive and preventative maintenance inspections on electrical equipment because excess heat is most commonly the first sign of trouble on electrical and mechanical components. Loose connections, imbalanced circuits, defective breakers, damaged switchgear, faulty fuses or fuse clips, overloaded circuits, poor workmanship, material defects and a range of other conditions will eventually lead to excess heat and then, component failure.

Equipment Commonly Inspected During and Electrical Infrared Inspection

• Electrical utility substations, transformers and feeder poles
• Main electrical incoming services, transformers, capacitor banks, etc.
• Main electrical switchboards and disconnects
• Main electrical distribution panels and disconnects
• Uninterruptable electrical power supplies
• Generator controls and transfer switches
• Main I-Line electrical panels
• Lighting and receptacle electrical panels
• Motor Control Centers
• Service electrical disconnects for motors
• Bus Ducts
Locate Faulty AFCI and GFCI Outlets and Breakers
It’s important to understand that different heat indicators can signify varying electrical components. A breaker operating at or near ambient temperatures is considered normal. On the other hand, excessive heat levels can indicate a faulty connection or device. However, in the case of AFCI or GFCI devices, heat is actually a sign of proper operation. These devices have built-in circuit controllers to detect electrical faults. If an AFCI or GFCI breaker operates at ambient temperature, it could indicate a failed device and require further testing or replacement.

Electrical Infrared INSPECTION STANDARDS

We perform qualitative and quantitative electrical infrared inspections which are used for predictive/preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, failure inspection, and research and development by facilities throughout Hawaii. All our Infrared (IR) inspections are performed by Infraspection Institute Level 2 Certified Infrared Thermographers using state-of-the-art equipment with industry developed reporting standards.
Infrared Inspection Hawaii performs electrical infrared inspections in accordance with the Infraspection Standard for Infrared Inspections of Electrical Systems & Rotating Equipment.
